Prescribed burning

THE AIM OF THIS COURSE:

The Prescribed Burning training course is designed to provide knowledge and skills for using prescribed burning for different forest and nature management purposes. In addition the course provides understanding of trends and connections between climate change and forest fires. 

This course helps you to:

  • Understand the benefits of prescribed burning as a silvicultural forest management method and it’s importance in biodiversity management 
  • Understand the benefits of prescribed burning in forest fire management 
  • Learn what are the important factors affecting forest fire behaviour and how to address them during the prescribed burning
  • Prepare a detailed prescribed burning plan with respect to how big the fire will be, what will it burn, and what managers hope to accomplish with the fire 
  • Familiarise yourself with the forest firefighting equipments and fire safety measures 
  • Learn how to organise in practice the prescribed burn with learnings derived from a real world case study illustrations

All forest professionals, fire fighters, forest owners, and forestry students

THE STUDY MODE:

The study program consists of an online video course supported by additional reading material and quizzes (self-evaluation-test)

AT THE END OF THE COURSE:

You will have a clear understanding on how to use prescribed burning for different purposes and what are the benefits of prescribed burning. You know how to organise a prescribed burning, how to prepare your own checklist, what safety precautions need to be taken, how to effectively carry out a prescribed burning with modern tools, what are the post-burning measures to be taken – and many more important and practical topics, hints and tips to apply the learning in your own forest fire management measures.

Adj.Prof. Dr

Liisa Toivonen

Dr. Toivonen is the CEO of BioAcademy. In addition, she holds a position of Adjunct Professor in Energy wood production at the University of Eastern Finland, where she has done a long career of more than 20 years. During her university career at UEF she served as the Director of International Relations, Director Professor of the Finnish-Russian Cross-Border University (CBU) and as a Finnish Co-Director of Sino-Finnish Environmental Research Centre in Nanjing University, China. Liisa has always been very active in developing international cooperation, in addition to her university positions she has hold the posts of e.g. Secretary General of the Silva Network, and member of Interim Council of IPFE Global Partnership for Forestry Education. Her passion is to effect on development towards the sustainable future. Empowering young experts by providing enough information of alternative futures is currently one of the sectors she is actively working e.g. to develop international educational modules about Finnish pedagogy, nature based pedagogy, experiential learning, and innovative entrepreneurship.

Dr.

Karthikeyan Natarajan

Dr. Natarajan, holds Ph.D in Forestry from the University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu. He specialise in forest biomass and bioenergy with strong expertise in optimisation methods. At BioAcademy, he is tailor making international training program to provide exposure to the novel European forest fire safety techniques and tactical training for effective forest fire management to suit the target country conditions. He is an expert in traditional fire prevention techniques such as prescribed burning. In addition, he has longstanding experience in conducting international training programs for IFS officers in Finland, Russia and Philippines. He has significant experience over 10 years in academic, research and business in the forest and energy sector.
